Porter Walked!!! & I need your help

{Get in the water to make a grumpy Porter happy!}

Friday I was babysitting my friend's 2 year old, Miley, and she was playing very well with Porter. She had him pull to stand to look out the window with her and she walked about 6 feet away from him. Porter let go, turned towards her and took 4 steps, stopped, balanced himself perfectly, then finished walking to her. I was in total awe! I didn't want to over-celebrate because that scares him. I just silently contained my excitement.

Now just because he walked doesn't mean he's walking. This confirms what my Mommy intuition has been telling me -- we're not dealing with a skills problem, it's a complex about walking. He can do it, he just chooses not to. I think I'll be having Miley come play more. ;)

I have a question for you DS mommas: Let me give you a little background: 8 months ago I started buying Porter 12-month old size clothes for winter; they were a little long but fit for the most part. We're headed back into winter and now the length fits him great, but these same clothes are falling off his skinny bones. We spent last weekend with my family and they assured me he's getting taller, but another individual made a comment about his size that peeved me. 4 months ago Porter weighed 19 lbs, now he's 17lbs and continuing to lose. Leading me to ask, Should I be worried? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to add a nutritionist to our list of specialists? I've brought this up with one of Porter's doctors and he had us complete a thyroid test that his other doctor neglected to complete at Porter's 1 year check up, grr.... We're still waiting on results, but the doctor told us an abnormality is unlikely. Porter is not a picky eater, he eats pretty much anything, especially since his molars have come in and he doesn't struggle with his gag reflex so much. I've started tracking his Calorie intake, but I don't even know what I should be shooting for. Any insight, information, and comfort would be greatly appreciated!

Truth be told-- I love having a petite toddler! It's easier on my back, he still fits so well in my arms, that and I love P just the way he is no matter what, forever and always!

First off WAY TO GO PORTER!!!!

As for the eating and weight, my boys have both always been at the top of the charts, but my nephew is a string bean! He's 13mo older than Landon and they are the same size! Now, he doesn't have Ds, but my sisters Dr. suggested adding more fat when he started loosing weight and growing. Simple things like ranch dressing for dipping rather than ketchup, extra butter and cheese when making grilled cheese, avocados, peanut butter on toast...basically adding a little extra fat to each meal.

It may be different for kids with Ds though so you can take my suggestions with a grain of salt! :)

Awesome job Porter!!! I think we're months away from that so I'm totally jealous;)

It could be because he's more mobile now and burning more calories but also people with DS are usually smaller. Bennett was 20 pounds at a year and I think he's maybe 21 but he's gone back down to 20 before. He was on a roll and then just kinda stopped. I think it's a combo of the crawling and the DS. He's not going to be big (Bennett) so unless it's a ton of weight loss and blood work is normal I try not to get concerned.

It's normal for toddlers to level out in their weight and if he's eating the same but moving more, that could be why. Hope his blood work comes back just fine!

Addi was petite at that age too. We find the food with the most calories and feed her those. We fed her sweet potatoes, yo-baby yogurt, avocados, etc. I don't know if that will help you. I don't have that problem this time around Aidan almost weighs as much as Porter. Way to go porter on walking Addi refused to walk until 15 months but then when she decided to she was off and walking really fast after taking her first steps.

Porter... you are awesome! Keep up the walking skills!
I'd have to completely agree with Adrienne. Justin has always been "tiny." He's only in the 3rd percentile on the Down syndrome growth chart for weight. His highest weight was about 22 pounds several months back. He was recently weighed and is back down to 20 and some ounces. Am I worried... nope. He is more mobile, getting taller, and most of all... just a little boy with Down syndrome who is just gonna be small! And I'm with you... I love my itty bitty cuddle bug. I know he eats well and plays hard. In my opinion, there is nothing to be worried about. As long as he's eating and moving, I would assume all is well! Hope your family is well!

:) yay for walking!!! so excited for porter!!! well, you know camden is teeny tiny...and i have lost hope of hitting the 20 lbs by age one lol i don't think he will pick up 6 pounds in the next 3 months...so...i'm with you on the tiny cuddles...i love it! and i think after age one the weight is suppose to slow down because they are more mobile and moving from little rolly pollies into little boys or girls...:) not that i have had a kid hit that...but i can promise cam will be there too haha...so if his blood comes back normal...i say let his body do its thing!

Yay Porter! I really wouldn't worry about the weight unless your doctor's get concerned. Emerie has always been under the 20th percentile and the doctor just determined it's because she is so active. So, we end up feeding her little meals and snacks all day long and when she's 2 we might start on a vitamin or weight supplement. But I don't worry - unless she is begging me for food, I know she's getting enough. And if she has energy for all her activities, she MUST be getting enough! :)

Go Porter!!!!
Max lost weight at his previous checkup... I know it was because he was learning to crawl (or scoot in his case) and he wasn't just sitting still any more. I was actually surprised he still weighed about the same last week. I thought he had gotten leaner. So, with Porter learning to walk (another YAY!!) is he using more calories?
(ok just scolled down and read the other similar posts)
And Piper only gained a couple pounds between yr 1 and 2. I wouldn't worry, unless he gets lethargic and sickly.

Way to go P!! That's great news that he is getting more and more comfortable with walking!
